Name | Population Density |
Summary | Total resident population density for for states, counties, cities, towns, and places based on land area |
Additional Background |
This database reports recent population density figures (persons per square mile) based on annual population, estimated on July 1st of each year, and land area reported by the U.S. Census. Density from 1990-1999 is based on 1990 land area; 2000-current density is based on land area in each of those years.
Of note, the Census Bureau does not report land or water area by county for places in more than one county; this database uses land area to calculate population density. For these places, the Bureau reports total land and water area under one county name. Notably, the associated county may not reflect the place's larger/largest area or higher/highest population count.
The benchmark for population estimates are dicennial Censuses. The most recent occurred in 2020.
1 square mile = 640 acres = 2.58999 square kilometers = 258.999 hectares.
