This database reports individuals granted asylum defensively by country of nationality by Fiscal Year (Oct. 1-Sept. 30).  Defensive asylum may be granted during removal proceedings before an immigration judge of the Executive Office for Immigration Review of the Department of Justice. In contrast, affirmatively granted asylum occurs through a USCIS asylum officer.  (An individual may derive asylum status as the spouse or child of an asylee.)
