This database reports individuals granted asylum affirmatively by country of nationality by Fiscal Year (Oct. 1-Sept. 30). Affirmatively granted asylum occurs through a USCIS asylum officer.  In contrast, asylum may be granted defensively during removal  proceedings before an immigration judge of the Executive Office for Immigration Review of the Department of Justice. (An individual may derive asylum status as the spouse or child of an asylee.) For additional information, see Obtaining Asylum in the United States.

Note that Serbia and Montenegro figures reflect Yugoslavia (unknown republic) prior to February 7, 2003.
