Name | Direct General Expenditures Of State And Local Government For Education |
Summary | Total general expenditures and expenditures on education by all sources |
Additional Background | This database contains state direct general expenditures and total expenditures on elementary and secondary education, post-secondary education, and other education by all sources. Data are presented in millions of current dollars. Years reflect the second year of a traditional academic calendar, 2016 reflects the 2015-2016 academic year.
Direct general expenditures include state and local government expenditures for education services, social services and income maintenance, transportation, public safety, environment and housing, governmental administration, interest on general debt, and other general expenditures. Other education expenditures include assistance and subsidies to individuals, private elementary and secondary schools, and private colleges and universities, as well as miscellaneous education expenditures. Expenditure data may differ from similar data categories in other tables because of slightly varying definitions used in the Governmental Finances and Common Core of Data surveys. The sum of expenditure categories may not sum to totals because of rounding. In 1991, 1994-1995, 1997-1998, 2001, and 2002, capital outlays for elementary and secondary education includes outlays for "other education." Some expenditure data may vary slightly because of changes in definitions used in the Governmental Finances and Common Core of Data surveys. Detail may not sum to totals because of rounding. Some data have been revised from previously published figures.
