Additional Background | This database contains the number of associate, bachelor, master, and doctorate degrees by degree-granting U.S. institutions participating in Title IV federal financial aid programs. Degree-granting institutions are defined as those that participate in Title IV federal financial aid programs. Years indicate the second year of a traditional academic year, i.e., 2011 data refect the 2010-2011 year.
Doctorate degrees includes Ph.D., Ed.D., and comparable degrees at the doctoral level, such as M.D., D.D.S., and law degrees. Prior to 2009, this included any degree requiring six years of college work, including at least two years of pre-professional training. Categories containing “totals for all institutions” exclude degrees for which data are not available. Totals exclude private for-profit institutions only prior to 2009. In 1997-2004, U.S. Service Schools data exclude Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, National Defense University, Air Force Institute of Technology, Community College of the Air Force, Naval Postgraduate School, Joint Military Intelligence College, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Some data in 1999 were imputed. NA indicates not applicable or not available.
