The SAT was formerly known as the Scholastic Assessment Test and the Scholastic Aptitude Test.  This database contains average SAT scores for graduating seniors and the percentage of graduates taking the SAT, based on projected graduates by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).  Total scores vary by years as this calculation depends on SAT components, which have changed over time.  For example, in 2017, Total score equals to the sum of Evidence-based reading and writing (ERW) plus Math.  From 2006-2016, the total score equals the sum of Critical reading plus Mathematics plus Writing.  For 1996-2005, total equals Math plus Reading scores.  The critical reading section was previously known as the verbal section, and verbal scores are reported in the reading category.  Figures are presented by test score or in percent. Graduates taking the SAT are available to one-decimal place only after 2011.

Years reflect the second year of a traditional academic year, e.g., 2017 reflects the 2016-2017 academic year.
